2021 Portuguese Presidential Election: Luís Marques Mendes Withdraws From the Race

The 2021 Portuguese presidential election is fast approaching, and one of the leading candidates, Luís Marques Mendes, has announced his withdrawal from the race. Mendes is a prominent figure in Portuguese politics, having served as leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) from 2005 to 2008. He is also a former Minister of State and Minister of Finance.

Mendes' withdrawal from the race comes as a surprise to many, as he was considered to be one of the frontrunners in the polls. However, he has said that he believes it is in the best interests of the country for him to step aside.

Mendes' withdrawal from the race leaves the field of candidates wide open. The current president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is seeking re-election, and he is considered to be the favorite. However, there are several other candidates who could challenge him, including former Prime Minister António Costa and former European Commissioner Carlos Moedas.

The 2021 Portuguese presidential election is scheduled to be held on January 24th, 2021.
