Melania Trump's Hometown Sees Surge in Tourism
Visitors Flock to Sevnica, Slovenia
SEVNICA, Slovenia - When Melania Trump was born in 1970, her small industrial hometown on the banks of the Sava River was little known outside of Slovenia. But since her husband, Donald Trump, became president of the United States, Sevnica has seen a surge in tourism.
"We've seen a big increase in the number of visitors since the election," said Maja Kocbek, the mayor of Sevnica. "People are coming from all over the world to see where Melania grew up."
Growing Up in Sevnica
Melania Trump, born Melanija Knavs, grew up in a modest apartment building in Sevnica. Her father was a car salesman and her mother worked in a textile factory. She attended local schools and studied design and architecture at the University of Ljubljana.
After graduating, Melania moved to Milan, Italy, to pursue a modeling career. She met Donald Trump in 1998 and they married in 2005. The couple has one son, Barron.
Tourist Attractions
Sevnica is a charming town with a rich history. Visitors can explore the town's medieval castle, visit the Melania Trump Museum, and take a walk along the Sava River.
"We're proud of Melania and her accomplishments," said Kocbek. "We're happy to share our town with visitors from around the world."
